How to View Jamestown Live!

- Jamestown Live! is a 60 minute "streaming" webcast and is not downloadable.
- Links and information will be available for testing on OCTOBER 26, 2006 at 8:00am and available for testing anytime until November 9th.
- Toll-free tech help by phone will be available on November 8th & 9th.
- Archive viewing of Jamestown Live! will be available for 90 days after November 9th.
- For FREE TEACHER RESOURCES and TEACHER GUIDE please visit www.jamestownjourney.org and click on Jamestown Live! Please answer the survey questions.
- Your students are invited to send email questions about Jamestown in advance by going to the Jamestown Journey Website. Some questions may be selected for use in the show and if selected, your school will be mentioned on the webcast.

Step 3: Click on the Jamestown Live! icon and follow the instructions.

You can also downlink Jamestown Live! via satellite at the coordinates listed to the right. The broadcast begins at 1:00PM ET on Thursday, November 9th. From 12:30PM to 1:00PM ET on November 9th only, we will broadcast a Jamestown Live! "slate" so that you will know you're at the correct satellite coordinates. We encourage our educators to take advantage of this free broadcast service. This transmission is restricted and embargoed for downloading by educational systems only and not for commercial use. |

| Basic program requirements |
| To view the webcast you will need Windows Media Player version 9 or 10. The webcast will be encoded for PCs at two speeds:
56k-100k and 500k. |

| Configuration |
Once you have installed the player, you will want to optimize it for live video streaming. There are two specific settings that should be changed.
- Launch Windows Media Player.
- Make sure your screen is maximized
- Click on "Tools" and select "Options".
- In the Options window, click on the "Network" tab. All four streaming protocol boxes should be checked: Multicast, UDP, TCP and HTTP.
- In the "Streaming Proxy" Settings box, HTTP should state "Browser" next to HTTP.
- Now click on the "Performance" tab. The "Connection Speed" can be set to "Detect Connection Speed". However, if you experience difficulties, click on the radio button next to "Choose Connection Speed." Set it to LAN or T1.

Once you have installed QuickTime, you will want to optimize it for live video streaming.
- Launch QuickTime.
- In the toolbar, click on "QuickTime Player." Choose "QuickTime Preferences" beneath the Apple icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
- Click on the "Streaming" tab and set "Streaming Speed" to "Intranet/LAN."
- Click on "Advanced," and click on the "Transport Setup" drop down menu. Choose "Custom."
- Click on the "Transport Protocol" drop down button and choose "HTTP." Port ID is defaulted to "80": that is fine.
- Close the "Preferences" window.

| Full-screen viewing |
Windows Media Player will launch automatically when you click on the live stream or test stream links.
To watch in Full Screen mode, click on "View" in the menu bar and scroll down to "Full Screen."
(You can also use the keyboard shortcut Alt + Enter. This shortcut takes the video into and out of Full Screen mode.)

QuickTime will open within a browser window without the ability to view full screen.
With the free QuickTime player, you can enlarge the video to "Double Size."
QuickTime Pro users, by following a few simple steps, may watch in Full Screen.
- First, click on the live stream link, choose "View" in the browser window menu bar, and click on "Show Address Bar" (if it is not already visible).
- Copy the URL from the address bar.
- Now, open QuickTime, choose "Open URL," and paste in the URL. This enables full function of all controls including Full Screen.
- To use Full Screen mode, click on "View" in the menu bar, then "Full Screen." You can also use the keyboard and select Apple-F.
- Press Esc to leave Full Screen mode.
