New York City

The History Channel and the City of New York have partnered on a groundbreaking initiative to make New York City a premiere destination for heritage tourism and to highlight New York's rich history that often goes unexplored. New York City's five boroughs—Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Staten Island and Queens—are chock full of landmarks and events from the past that still resonate today.

Did you know that New York City was the first capital of the United States?

There is so much history to learn and see in New York City and we have put together a few resources for your next trip to the Big Apple. First, we have the Heritage Tourism Center, located in City Hall Park, where you can pick up free maps and walking tour information for historic lower Manhattan, as well as the rest of NYC. Second, if you would rather take a more leisurely journey back in time, get yourself tickets to the NYC Official Heritage Trolley Tour to experience history through the stories of assorted characters from NYC's past.

The Historic Houses of NYC are scattered throughout the 5 boroughs and span over 350 years of NYC history. They are open to the public and provide a unique perspective to the cultural history of New York City.

And if you're looking for a truly historic hotel, you will find The Roosevelt Hotel in midtown Manhattan a perfect choice. Named for President Theodore Roosevelt and opened in 1922, the "Grande Dame of Madison Avenue" has meticulously restored interiors to go with their modern amenities.

Also not to be missed is a cruise around Manhattan. Much history has been made on the waters of the Hudson and East Rivers, and going aboard the Circle Line Downtown gives you an opportunity to see it.
