Our Generation - Steve Gillon

Dr. Steve Gillon is Resident Historian for The History Channel and professor of history at the University of Oklahoma. He has anchored The History Channel Sunday morning current events program, HistoryCENTER, since its debut in 1998. He also hosts Reel to Real, and has appeared in numerous network specials, including, History vs. Hollywood and The Presidency Revealed. He has anchored live broadcasts marking the 60th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the dedication of the World War II memorial in Washington D.C.

From 1997 until 2004, Dr. Gillon was the Carol E. Young Professor and Dean of the Honors College at the University of Oklahoma. Previously, he was University Lecturer on Modern History at England's legendary Oxford University, and an Associate Professor of History at Yale University, where he was awarded the DeVane Medal for outstanding undergraduate teaching in 1993. Dr. Gillon earned his A.M. and PhD in American Civilization from Brown University. He has lectured throughout the United States and around the world. Since 2002, he has been named as a "Distinguished Lecturer" by the Organization of American Historians (OAH).

In addition to his work on television and in the classroom, Dr. Gillon is the author of a number of critically acclaimed books and articles on a wide range of topics in American history. He also served as a contributing editor of George Magazine from 1997 until 2001. Among his many publications are Politics and Vision (Oxford University Press, 1987); The Democrats' Dilemma (Columbia University Press, 1992); That's Not What We Meant To Do (W.W. Norton, 2002), and Boomer Nation (Free Press, 2004). He has also written two college textbooks: The American Paradox: A History of the United States Since 1945 (Houghton Mifflin, 2nd ed. 2006), and The American Experiment: A History of the United States (Houghton Mifflin, 2nd ed. 2005) with co-author Cathy Matson. His most recent book is 10 Days that Unexpectedly Changed America (Crown 2006) the companion volume for The History Channel special which aired in April 2006.
