Moses went with his brother Aaron to Pharaoh and asked him to free the Hebrews. Pharaoh refused, and in response God sent down a plague after each refusal of Pharaoh, ten in all. The plagues ranged from turning the water of the Nile River into blood, an outbreak of boils, pestilence, and ended with God killing all of the first born of Egypt (livestock included). After the tenth plague, Pharaoh agreed with Moses' demand and the Hebrews
left Egypt. When the Hebrews neared the Red Sea (also known as the Sea of Reeds), a large Egyptian military force led by Pharaoh approached the Hebrews from behind. Moses held out his staff and the sea split forming two huge walls of water with a path of dry land in the middle. The Hebrews crossed on dry land, and when the Egyptians tried to cross the sea the walls crashed down drowning all the Egyptians. Many contemporary scholars believe that the exodus took place around the 13th century BCE.
