2006 National Honors Winners

National Honors Award Recipients

The History Channel is proud to recognize preservation organizations, teachers and students for their commitment to exploring and preserving their local history. On June 4-6th, 2006, The History Channel hosted a three day celebration in Washington, DC for 10 of our grant recipients and the Save Our History Teacher and Student of the year. Participants enjoyed a special tour of The White House, a monument tour and other activities during their stay. The National Honors winners received their awards from a very special host at The White House -- First Lady Laura Bush. The Save Our History Teacher and Student of the Year received $5,000 prizes and three 2005/2006 grant recipients received an additional $10,000 to continue their local history efforts. Save Our History congratulates all of the 2006 award recipients for their hard work and dedication!

Lise Marlowe

Elkins Park Middle School

Cheltenham, Pennsylvania

"Back in Time with Cheltenham" - Mrs. Marlowe led her sixth grade students through the role the Cheltenham, PA community played in the Underground Railroad, the training of the first federal camp for African American troops during the Civil War and the role that local philanthropists, such as Lucretia Mott, played in the years after the war. Mrs. Marlowe and her students produced a 65 minute documentary and a 50 page book on their local history.

2006 Save Our History Student of the Year & Finalists

Matthew Cesare

Mars Area High School

Mars, Pennsylvania

"Preserving History in Mars and Zelienople, PA" - Since 1999, Matthew has been involved in the restoration and relocation of a historic train station in his hometown of Mars, Pennsylvania. Matthew and the Mars Historical Society were able to save the station from demolition and also contribute to the restoration of an historic movie theater in the neighboring town of Zelienople. Matthew has contributed to saving his local history through fund-raising efforts, physical restoration and community activism.
