The Hosts

Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran teamed up in 1992 to publish the magazine Weird NJ, which chronicles the bizarre events, local folklore and odd personalities throughout the Garden State.

Weird US HostDoing it more for love rather than to make money (which they never thought it would), for the next decade they would travel the highways, byways, back roads and underground passageways of New Jersey, seeking to document the unusual, little known history and myriad mysteries of their home state. Together the pair wrote, photographed, edited, and published their findings in their magazine twice yearly.

After a dozen issues, they began to realize that what they were recording in their journals was something quite unique: they were recounting tales to their readers that had never been told outside the perimeters of the towns where these wild stories had originated! And the weird thing was, that who ever they encountered was more than willing share a story or offer a lead to set Mark and Mark off on another adventure into the unknown. Through the magazine they took the readers along with them on their journey, never quite sure what they might find around the next curve in the road.

Are they historians, folklorists, or just two guys from Jersey out for the ultimate weird adventure of a lifetime? Their cult following in New Jersey had begun to lead them to travel outside the boundaries of their home state. Stories, letters and emails kept pouring in from all states of the union, telling them that there is a whole weird world outside of New Jersey.

That's when they thought: "What the heck-let's go for a ride, check it out, compare notes and see how weird the United States really is!" They just didn't realize that the road they chose would be a never-ending odyssey of the American landscape, from it's shining mountains to its darkest depths.

In 2003 their bestselling book, Weird NJ: Your Travel to New Jersey's Local Legends and Best Kept Secrets was published by Barnes & Noble to rave reviews. In 2004, Mark and Mark began a nationwide exploration of, and investigation into, the strange and unexplained with their second book, Weird U.S. Currently the Marks work as executive editors on the bestselling Weird book series which is published by Barnes & Noble, and includes volumes on a variety of states including; New York, Texas, Florida, and California, as well as a dozen others in the works.

In addition to that, The History Channel "Weird US" television series has them traipsing across the United States, bringing all of America on the weird ride with them. But let everyone be forewarned: This is a trip you may find disturbing, insightful or at the least, very strange. You may never look at history the same way again.

Mark and Mark have produced video, audio, and a Web site (www.WeirdNJ.com) companions for Weird NJ and Weird U.S. (www.WeirdUS.com). They have spoken extensively at venues throughout NJ and NY. They have appeared on all of the major television networks and several cable stations including, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and MTV (but none have been as nice to them as The History Channel). They have been written about in papers such as the New York Times, LA Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Boston Globe, Chicago Sun-Times, Miami Herald and Rolling Stone magazine, to name just a few.

Along with a small staff of friends and family, they continue to publish Weird NJ Magazine twice yearly. They have a small but comfortable office in New Jersey that they staunchly refuse to divulge the location of.

Mark MoranMark Moran is a graduate of Parson's School of Design in New York City, where he studied fine art, illustration and photography. His work has appeared in numerous magazines and books. His interest in the weird began at a young age when he sought to find out something, anything, interesting about the boring suburban NJ neighborhood he called home. This quest has led him to a lifelong fascination with mysterious places, bizarre sites, unusual people and all-but-forgotten history, wherever it might be found. Inspired as much by his journeys as his destinations, Mark's greatest satisfaction in life comes from sharing his adventures with the rest of the world through his writing, photography and artwork.

When he is not traipsing around the country filming Weird U.S. for The History Channel or researching books, Mark enjoys fresh and saltwater sport fishing and playing electric guitar really loud. He is a connoisseur of fine (and not-so-fine) ales, both foreign and domestic. These days he lives in a boring suburban neighborhood in West Orange, NJ with his wife Barbara and their two daughters. Why? Because after all of his research into the strange, he feels that this is not only the best, but also the weirdest, place to be.

Mark SceurmanHad he not grown in the suburban wasteland of New Jersey in the 1960s, Mark Sceurman just may have ended up to be a very good professional Proctologist. But when you come from suburbia, you have plenty of time to daydream, goof off and not worry about what you're going to be when you grow up. Luckily for him, he never took the advise of his acedemic counselors and made something of himself. In other words, he took the time to choose his own roads that led him to his present day occupation as a publisher, graphic artist, and all around nice guy.

His love of local history and all things weird sparked a crazy idea that made him first think of the Weird NJ concept. A concept that was so off-the-wall and unconventional, that in his mind, he thought it just might work. He only needed to find someone that was equally crazy to think they could pull off a magazine that involved a lot of work, but had no rhyme or reason as to why it should exist. The rest, as they say, is weird history.

Sceurman now lives an unconventional life in a very conventional surrounding in Bloomfield, NJ with his wife Shirley and their daughter. He likes rock and roll, draft beer and knowing that in a small way, he has contributed to getting people to look at their surroundings much differently than they had before.
