(1918–86), American lyricist and librettist, known for his musical comedies written in collaboration with the composer Frederick Loewe. Born in New York City, Lerner studied at Harvard University and worked in New York City writing advertising copy and radio scripts. In 1942 he met and began working with Loewe. Their most notable Broadway successes were Brigadoon (1947) and My Fair Lady (1956; adapted from Pygmalion by the British dramatist George Bernard Shaw). Their other collaborations include the film Gigi (1958; stage version 1973), which won an Academy Award for best motion picture, and the musical Camelot (1960), based on The Once and Future King, by the English author T. H. White. Lerner won an Academy Award for his screenplay for An American in Paris (1951). He was lyricist-librettist for Love Life (1948) by the German-American composer Kurt Weill; On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1965) by the American composer Burton Lane (1912–97); Coco (1969), in collaboration with another American composer, André Previn (1929– ); and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue (1977), with music by Leonard Bernstein.
