(1826–86), American soldier and politician, born in Jackson Co., Ill., and educated at Shiloh College and the University of Louisville. He served in the Illinois state legislature in 1852 and in 1856 and was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1859 to 1862. At the outbreak of the American Civil War he resigned his seat to join the Union army, with the rank of colonel. He became major general in 1862; in 1863 he commanded a division in the campaign to take Vicksburg, Miss., and was appointed military governor of that city after its surrender. In 1864 he commanded the Army of the Tennessee in the battle at Atlanta, Ga. He retired from the army in 1865 with the rank of major general, and in 1867 he was returned to Congress as a Republican from Illinois. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1871 to 1877 and from 1879 to 1886. In 1884 he was the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket with James G. Blaine, the presidential candidate, but was defeated. Logan founded the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans.
