OBOTE, (Apollo) Milton

(1924–2005), prime minister (1962–66) and president (1966–71, 1980–85) of Uganda. He was born on Dec. 28, 1924, in the village of Akoroko, in Lango, in the north-central area of the country. The son of a chief, Obote was a labor organizer in Kenya before returning to Uganda in 1957 to serve in the legislative council under the British. He was the founder (1960) of the Uganda People's Congress and at its head led his country to independence in 1962. Declaring Uganda a unitary republic instead of a federal one, he assumed the presidency in 1966 and subsequently attempted to form a one-party state, but he was ousted in 1971 by Maj. Gen. Idi Amin and went into exile in Tanzania. He returned in 1979, after Amin's overthrow, and in 1980 was elected president. Overthrown in a military coup in July 1985, he found refuge in Zambia. He died on Oct. 10, 2005, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
