When Apollo 17 safely returned to Earth in the Pacific Ocean on December 19, 1972, it marked the end of the Apollo lunar landing program. The program, which was U.S. President John F. Kennedy's goal, lasted three years.
The first manned space mission and the first man on the moon on the Apollo 11 is reviewed in this History Channel video. Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin were the crew of the Apollo 11 sponsored by NASA. The date was 7/20/1969.
On this day in 1970, with the world anxiously watching, Apollo 13, a U.S. lunar spacecraft that suffered a severe malfunction on its journey to the moon, safely returns to Earth.
In 1967, the crew that was to man the first Apollo mission met with a fatal tragedy. Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee all died in a fire in the Apollo Command Module on January 27, 1967. | Courtesy of NASA (Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center)
