RYAZAN

city, W Russian Federation, capital of Ryazan Oblast, on the Oka R. The city is an industrial and transportation center. Manufactures include agricultural machinery, petrochemical products, precision instruments (including radar equipment), electronic items, and textiles. Ryazan State Medical University (1950) is here. The birthplace of the Russian physiologist Ivan Petrovich Pavlov, a Nobel laureate, has been turned into a museum.

Ryazan was originally established downstream from its present site; the city marks its founding date as 1095. It was completely destroyed by the Tatars in 1237, after which the seat of the Ryazan bishopric was moved to Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky. In the 15th century the community became the capital of a principality. It passed to Moscow in 1521 and was given its present name in 1778. Pop. (2002 census) 521,560.
