(1740–1803), Irish revolutionary, born in Dublin. He supported Henry Grattan in his campaign to win autonomy for Ireland, and he acquired popularity with his proposal to boycott British goods in response to restrictions imposed by the British on Irish commerce. In 1792 he formed an Irish national guard, which was suppressed; Tandy managed to escape to the U.S. In 1798 he went to Paris and was given command of a ship to invade Ireland and encourage a popular uprising against British rule. The expedition failed, and Tandy fled to Hamburg, where he and his men were captured and delivered to the British government. He was condemned to death and then reprieved through French influence. Tandy is remembered as the hero of the popular Irish ballad “The Wearing of the Green.”
