TANGELO

name applied to any of various hybrid CITRUS, (q.v.) fruits produced by crossing two citrus fruits, most commonly the GRAPEFRUIT, or SHADDOCK, with the TANGERINE, (qq.v.). Tangelos were first cultivated in the 19th century and are valued for their sweet taste and large size. They are generally orangelike in taste but are less round in shape. The term tangelo is a combination of the words tangerine and pomelo, a less frequent term for the grapefruit and shaddock. Florida grows virtually the entire U.S. tangelo crop.
