THORNDIKE,Dame (Agnes) Sybil

(1882–1976), English actor, born in Gainsborough. Dame Sybil made her acting debut in 1904. During World War I she took both male and female parts in Shakespearean plays at the Old Vic Theatre. An actor of great skill and versatility, Dame Sybil was especially noted for her tragic roles in Euripides’ The Trojan Women (1920) and in Saint Joan (1924), written for her by George Bernard Shaw; she subsequently played Saint Joan more than 2000 times. She also excelled in comedies, such as Shaw’s Candida (1924), She Stoops to Conquer (1943) by Oliver Goldsmith, and The Reluctant Peer (1964) by William Douglas Home (1912–92). She was married to the noted actor and director Sir Lewis Thomas Casson (1875–1969). In 1931 she was made a dame of the British Empire.
