PAKULA, Alan J

(1928-98), American film director, producer, and screenwriter, often of psychological thriller. Born April 17, 1928, in New York City, he graduated from Yale University (1948) with a major in drama; he broke in as a Hollywood producer with the film Fear Strikes Out (1957). Among notable movies he directed were Klute (1971, for which Jane Fonda won a best actress Oscar), All the President"s Men (1976, which earned Pakula an Academy Award nomination as best director and Jason Robards a supporting actor Oscar), Sophie"s Choice (1982, for which Meryl Streep won an Academy Award as best actress), Presumed Innocent (1990), and The Pelican Brief (1993). He died Nov. 19, 1998, on a Long Island, N.Y., highway, after a metal pipe crashed through the windshield of his car, striking him in the head.
