BOTVINNIK, Mikhail Moiseyevich

(1911–95), Russian chess player, born in Saint Petersburg. In 1927 Botvinnik won the title of chess master in the Soviet Union. In 1934 he successfully participated in his first international tournament, held in Moscow. Participation in other matches established Botvinnik as one of the leading contenders for the world championship title, held by the Russian chess champion Alexander Alekhine. After Alekhine died in 1946, the title was left vacant until 1948, when Botvinnik finally captured it. He held the title from 1948 to 1956, from 1958 to 1960, and from 1961 to 1963, when he finally lost it to Tigran Petrosian (1929–84), another Russian champion.
