(1860–1925), Swedish statesman and Nobel laureate, born in Stockholm. In 1889 he was one of the founders of the Social Democratic party in Sweden, and he successfully fought for social reforms, including universal suffrage. As the leader of a growing party he rose to minister of finance in 1917–18. In 1920, 1921–23, and 1924–25 he was prime minister; from 1921 to 1923 he was also foreign minister. He shared the 1921 Nobel Peace Prize with the Norwegian pacifist and historian Christian L. Lange.
