Senator Barry M Goldwater announced his candidacy for the U.S. presidency on January 3, 1964. The leader of the conservative wing of the Republican Party succeeded in winning the presidential nomination at the Republican National Convention in July.
A defiant Prime Minister Churchill proclaimed that Britain would "never surrender," and by 1941 the Royal Air Force had won the Battle of Britain.
On June 12, 1936, the Republican National Convention chose Governor Alfred M. Landon of Kansas to challenge President Franklin D. Roosevelt in his bid for a second term. Landon's conservative economics clearly resonated with the Republican Party.
