FRENCH INDIA

former overseas territory of France, comprising four enclaves on the Indian subcontinent known officially as Établissements Français de l'Inde (French Establishments in India). In descending order of size the enclaves, called villes libres (“free cities”), were Pondicherry, Karikal, and Yanaon, all on the southeast coast, and Mahé on the southwest coast. Pondicherry Commune was the territorial capital. The territory was ceded to India in 1956.
