GUSTAV VI ADOLPH

(1882–1973), king of Sweden (1950–73), son of King Gustav V, born in Stockholm, and educated at the universities of Uppsala and Oslo. He entered the army in 1902, served with both the Swedish and Norwegian forces, and obtained the rank of general in 1932. Known as a patron of the arts, Gustav was a serious collector of Chinese art. He also won an international reputation as a classical archaeologist, having worked in the field in Greece, Cyprus, and Italy. Gustav was succeeded by his grandson, King Carl XVI Gustaf.
