full name Robert Gordon Orr (1948– ), Canadian ice hockey player, born in Parry Sound, Ont. At age 12 he was signed to a junior amateur contract by the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League (NHL). When he reached the eligibility age of 18 in 1966, he began playing for the Bruins, leading the team to eight consecutive playoffs over the next ten years and two Stanley Cup championships (1970, 1972). A tough competitor known for his team leadership, Orr was not only an outstanding defenseman but a high scorer as well. The first defenseman to score more than 100 points (goals and assists combined) in a season, Orr was also the first to lead the league in scoring—which he did twice (1970, 1975). He was chosen the NHL's top defensemen for eight consecutive years (1968–75) and was named the league's most valuable player three times (1970–72). In 1976 Orr played for the Chicago Blackhawks, also serving as assistant coach. Frequently injured during his career, he announced his retirement in 1978. Orr was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. For further information on this person, see the Bibliography, section
