SENNETT, Mack

(1884–1960), professional name of Michael Sinnott, American film producer and director, born in Danville, Québec. Originally a singer, Sennett started his film career working with the noted movie director D. W. Griffith. Between 1910 and 1929 Sennett produced more than 1000 silent films, in which he introduced slapstick comedy to American cinema. He created the beautiful Mack Sennett Girls and the group of comic policemen known as the Keystone Kops. Sennett directed most of the famous silent-film comedians, including Fatty Arbuckle (1887–1933), W. C. Fields, and Buster Keaton. He dictated his autobiography, King of Comedy (1954).
