The Search for George Washington

We see George Washington every day. His face on the one-dollar bill stares out at us, looking rather like a stern, grumpy grandfather. But is this what Washington really looked like? No one really has known. Until now.

The Search for George Washington is a detective story that follows, over the course of two and a half years, a fascinating forensic investigation whose mission is to determine, for the first time, the exact dimensions of this Founding Father from head to toe at three key moments in his life - at 19, 45 and 57.

What did Washington really look like?
No one really has known...until now!

In this episode of Save Our History we discover how an investigative team, including an anthropologist, computer programmers, historians, artists and craftsmen, uses classic forensic techniques, laser technology and sophisticated 3-D software to solve the puzzle of what George Washington looked like. The team then constructs three life-size figures of him as a 19-year-old surveyor, the 45-year-old Commanding General of the Continental Army at Valley Forge, and the 57-year-old taking the oath of office as the first president of the United States.

The Search for George Washington is a also a compelling journey through time that offers viewers a chance to see this Founding Father as a much more complicated person than they ever imagined.
