The reputed head of the Gambino crime family in New York City, John Gotti (center, 1940-2002) became one of the most visible and well-known crime bosses in the country. Nicknamed the "Teflon-don", Gotti consistently avoided conviction until 1992, when he was sentenced to life in prison for murder.
