The States: 08 - Virginia, Ohio, Idaho, Alabama, North Dakota
The States: 08 - Virginia, Ohio, Idaho, Alabama, North Dakota
Virginia was not only the home of the first permanent British colony; it was the birthplace of eight presidents of the United States. "The Gravity Grand Prix" has been an annual event in Akron, Ohio, since the 1930s and today draws 500 young entrants from around the nation. The discovery of gold, then lead, copper, zinc and silver, has made Idaho one of the richest mineral producing states in the nation. Poor hill farmers in Winston County rarely owned slaves and when Alabama seceded from the Union in 1861, Winston County tried to secede from Alabama. Teddy Roosevelt, America's first conservation president, learned valuable lessons about preserving nature while on his North Dakota ranch. TVPG VL | CC |

THC Classroom: Voices of Civil Rights.
THC Classroom: Voices of Civil Rights.
Join us for a fascinating look at one of the defining social movements in America's history--the Civil Rights Movement--told through the small, personal stories of men, women, and children who lived through this turbulent time. To collect these hundreds of personal narratives, a group of journalists, photographers, and videographers embarked on a 70-day bus trip around the country. The trove of material they collected makes up the country's largest archive of oral histories of the Civil Rights Movement and will be housed in the Library of Congress. What emerges as people tell us their stories is not a textbook history lesson, but a series of intimate themes that define and humanize the movement's growth and trajectory. We also provide a "big picture" of what was going on in the country during each period in the movement, from the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision to the assassination of Martin Luther King. TVPG VL | CC Show Site |

UFO Files: Alien Engineering
UFO Files: Alien Engineering
Prepare for an exercise in imagination. Suppose that an alien spacecraft crashed in the desert and we humans recovered it. What could we learn from its engineers? Using data gleaned from years of UFO sightings, we recreate a typical ship using cutting-edge animation, discover why aliens choose the craft shapes they do, learn how they overcome the effects of Earth's atmosphere, defy gravity, cancel inertia, and travel faster than the speed of light! Our experts--reverse engineers--show us what's "under the hood" of alien craft. We explore the technology that makes other-world visitations possible, what distance-shrinking device or wormhole excavator permits ships to travel space's expanse in minutes, and how the semi-transparent spacecraft skin functions. At first inspection, the technology seems crazy, but according to our experts, nothing is beyond the realm of possibility. TVPG VL | CC |

There are over 3,000 documented UFO physical trace cases and they have occurred in over 90 countries around the world. From impressions in the dirt, burned or broken vegetation and trees to scientific abnormalities that have yet to be explained, "trace cases" offer up some of the most convincing evidence of the UFO reality. Join us as we reveal what could possibly be evidence of "alien encounters." TVPG VL | CC |

The States: 09 - Michigan, Tennessee, Maine, Missouri, South Dakota
Michigan's logging industry helped build fortunes, but over-harvesting also threatened the environment. Davy Crocket, the coonskin-capped congressman from Tennessee, became more legend than reality thanks to 19th century political campaigns. Originally disdained as a food fit only for servants, lobsters are now a delicacy fueling Maine's fishing industries. Riverboat traffic and trailheads to Santa Fe and Oregon made Missouri the "Gateway to the West." The discovery of gold in the Black Hills in 1874 created a rush of prospectors who displaced Indians from sacred land that they'd been promised for eternity. TVPG VL | CC |

Ancient Aliens: The Return
Ancient Aliens: The Return
There is evidence that suggests we experienced 20th century alien contact. In 1942, the Battle of Los Angeles involved the US military and Air Defense allegedly fighting a UFO. WWII Allied Air Force planes were buzzed by balls of light that some think could have been extraterrestrial. And the alleged crash of a flying saucer in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 propelled the world into the age of UFOs. For decades, some people have been searching for the sounds of extraterrestrial intelligence, while others have been sending messages out into deep space. What would happen if aliens answered... or came calling? What protocols exist to determine who would speak on behalf of mankind, and how might we communicate? What happens if they return? Some believe they already have. TVPG VL | CC Show Site |

Ancient texts are filled with stories of gods interacting with humans, offering wisdom, technology, and even impregnating women. UFO Files: Mexico's Roswell.
Coyame, Mexico is a small town not far from the US border. It's home to three thousand people and possibly the best-kept secret of all-time. In August of 1974, the USA military was tracking a mysterious object over Mexico; then suddenly it disappeared from radar near Coyame. At the same time a civilian plane headed in the opposite direction is reported missing. What follows next is the stuff Hollywood blockbusters are made of: a crash site, a spacecraft, dead bodies, a covert recovery mission, and a government cover-up. Is this the story of the century, or just a piece of Mexican folklore? Over the last 15 years, Mexico has experienced an unprecedented UFO wave. While the sheer volume of encounters garners attention, it's the apparent quality, or credibility, of these incidents that has our attention. Through interviews with witnesses and experts we examine the evidence, and controversial footage released by the Mexican military reveals never before seen video. TVPG VL | CC |

UFO Files: Britain's Roswell.
Over three nights in December 1980, Air Force personnel stationed at a NATO installation in England witness strange lights in the sky above the RAF Bentwaters and Woodbridge bases. On the night of the 25th, when servicemen spot a glowing object in the woods, they investigate and come upon a triangular metallic craft. One of them touches it and records strange etchings in his notebook. It shoots above the treetops and the men are later found in a daze by other troops. Two nights later, the Deputy Base Commander and a team investigating the alleged site see lights over a field beyond the woods and a red object. It speeds off, beaming lights over the bases. Some witnesses allege use of force and sodium pentothal during interrogation.

Gadgets.
Gadgets.
They could be violent...wicked...or downright absurd. Whether they helped to take down outlaws, save a life, or just plain amuse, these techno gizmos revolutionized the unruly frontier. This episode looks at contraptions practical--and not--devised to tame the frontier. Objects include Wild West mouse traps, lie detectors, a metal detector (to locate bullets), an Elgin Cutlass Pistol (a Bowie/Revolver in one), kerosene headlamp, electrified brass rails, a self-containing breathing device, stream heat, a syringe, rubber condoms, a donkey engine and much more of the good, the bad and the technologically ugly. TVPG VL | CC |
Outlaw Tech.
Outlaw Tech.
We think of outlaws as a primitive bunch, but these bad men were ahead of their time and took advantage of new technology. Host Keith Carradine shows how dynamite and the telegraph assisted criminals, and how photography stole their anonymity. As the 20th century approached, the technology that had helped them outrun authorities caught up with them in the form of a new invention--the automobile. Butch Cassidy, Jesse James, Henry Starr, Black Jack Ketchum, and a few others make appearances. TVPG VL | CC |
Native American Tech.
Native American Tech.
Explore the might and power of the Native American tribes that once populated the Wild West with host Keith Carradine. We examine their weaponry--tomahawk, lance, slingshot, bow and arrow, and club--and how they cleverly adapted modern weaponry to their own use. You'll learn about their battle strategies as we introduce their most famous leaders, including Geronimo, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud, and Sitting Bull. And we demonstrate various medicinal and surgical procedures that they used on wounded warriors. TVPG VL | CC |
Shootout Tech.
Shootout Tech.
Shootouts are a staple of western-themed movies and TV shows. Funny thing is, they weren't everyday occurrences in the Old West. But when they happened they were wild and weird, and liquor was usually the fuel that ignited the spontaneous conflicts. Participants faced off at close range and fired with the technology of the day--the 6-shooter. Host David Carradine examines techniques and tricks employed by some of the best pistoleers around (the terms "gunfighter" and "gunslinger" are modern ones). We'll show you how practice made perfect and how even the experts needed a little luck to survive as we illustrate various shootout stories brought to life through multi-dimensional graphics. UFO Files: Texas' Roswell.
UFO Files: Texas' Roswell.
In April 1897--50 years before the alleged UFO crash in Roswell, New Mexico--a mysterious airship crash rocked the small town of Aurora, Texas...or at least, that's how the legend goes! The tale includes the wreckage from the ship, a funeral for the dead "alien" pilot, and thousands of witnesses from across the country. And the Aurora crash allegedly took place five years before the Wright Brothers flew at Kitty Hawk, so whatever was in the air was not manmade. Eyewitness accounts of the crash, mysterious metal found at the site, and the hunt for the only known alien graveyard are all combined into a story that has even the most adamant debunkers baffled. Is this the case that finally proves that UFOs are real? Join us as we separate fact from fiction. TVPG VL | CC |
Secret Access: UFOs on the Record
Secret Access: UFOs on the Record
From the prehistoric drawings through the Roswell incident, reports of strange and unexplainable sightings in the skies have become part of an unofficial historic record. With the proliferation of video and photo technology in the modern era, reports of these events--along with visual evidence--have only increased. 95% of UFO sightings are false, resulting either from misidentification or deliberate hoaxes. But the other 5% cannot be dismissed. Based on the newly published book "UFO's: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record," this two-hour special explores sightings that are supported by numerous creditable sources, from Air Force and commercial pilots, FAA officials, investigators, military Generals and NASA officials as well as hard data: photos, film, radar and audio recordings. This evidence presents a startling look at the very real possibility of alien visitation. TVPG VL | CC |

Myths and legends have long been regarded as fantastic stories that describe powerful gods, mutant giants and fearsome monsters. But why do so many different cultures, separated by vast distances, tell the same stories? Is it possible that myths and legends were really eyewitness accounts of ancient astronauts descending to Earth? Ancient texts are filled with stories of gods interacting with humans, offering wisdom, technology, and even impregnating women. Could the demigods of mythology have been the offspring of alien and human unions? If so, could aliens have supplied the Missing Link that accelerated human evolution, advancing our civilization and making us who we are today? TVPG VL | CC Show Site |

Touted as one of the "liveliest and peculiar places west of the Mississippi", in Deadwood, speculators, misfits, and cold-blooded killers came together to stake their claim. Located in South Dakota's Black Hills, in this raunchy, rip-roaring town, primitive technology met bold innovations, commerce and corruption collided, and shootouts were as common as the filth that filled the streets. We examine the good, bad, and ugly technologies of the last and richest gold-rush town, including stagecoaches and stagecoach robberies; bull whacking and bull trains; gold counterfeiting; saw mills; smelter and cyanide mills; electric marquees; and mortuary science.
