Fueled by pizza, we have burned the midnight oil, and from the battleground (MREs) to the final frontier (space food,) food is always along for the ride. This is the countdown of fast foods that takes us back, propels us forward, and sometimes even gazes into the future (the fortune cookie.) TVPG VL | CC |

Prophecies of Iraq
Prophecies of Iraq
It was one of the greatest cities ever depicted in biblical text. Hebrew prophets of the Bible all predicted its destruction--as many as 150 years before it happened. And, when in 539 BCE, Babylon fell to Cyrus the Great of Persia, the prophets were thought to have been proven correct. But scholars and academics have long debated the question of whether these ancient predictions were meant for the city of Babylon of more than 2,500 years ago, or whether they referred to a different Babylon, a future Babylon to be rebuilt where the old city once stood. Ancient Babylon is now known as modern-day Iraq, and eerily similar parallels exist between the prophecies of Babylon and the events of the late 20th and early 21st centuries--including both Gulf Wars and the downfall of Saddam Hussein. Is it possible that Biblical prophecies are playing out in modern times? TVPG VL | CC |

Cortés: Conqueror of Mexico.
Cortés: Conqueror of Mexico.
Hern n Cort s stands as one of the great Conquistadores of all time, and among the most brutal. His thirst for gold and power led him to Mexico in 1519, beginning a conquest unlike any other in history. Remarkably, Cort s was under strict orders not to engage in any wars of conquest when he was sent to meet with the rulers of the Aztec empire--orders unheeded by Cort s. His first contact with the indigenous people resulted in a battle that so terrified them that they fled into the interior of Mexico. They had never seen the guns, horses, and shiny metal armor of the conquistadors. In approximately two years, Cort s owned the Aztec empire, and their once proud ruler Montezuma was dead. Through brilliant execution, from an often precarious military position, Cort s killed hundreds of thousands of Aztecs and brought down the 300-year-old empire--the first major American civilization to fall to the Spanish. El Cid.
El Cid.
Known as El Cid (The Leader), the 11-century warrior Rodrigo D az liberated his fatherland from the Moors. Yet recent scholarship reveals many contradictions between reality and myth about Spain's first national hero. In one contemporary's words he was "the scourge of his time". Was he arrogant and insubordinate, a stern overlord driven by an unquenchable thirst for money? Before his death, he was already celebrated in a poem written in tribute of the conquest of Almer a; posthumously he was immortalized in the great epic Poema de M o Cid and was the centerpiece for countless other works of literature. Equally at home in the feudal kingdoms of northern Spain and the exotic Moorish-held lands of the south, when he died in Valencia in 1099, he was ruler of an independent principality that he had carved out of eastern Spain. Was Rodrigo a zealous Christian leader or a mercenary that sold his martial skills to Christian and Muslim alike? TVPG VL | CC |

Outnumbered and outgunned, the elite troops of the 101st Airborne Division refuse to surrender. The ordinary soldiers who had fought and died in the freezing foxholes of Belgium had played their part in a battle that would shape history. Mega Disasters: Gamma Ray Burst
Mega Disasters: Gamma Ray Burst
Scientists at the University of Kansas believe gamma ray bursts were responsible for a great mass extinction on Earth 450 million years ago. The gamma rays strip away the ozone layer and generate chemical smog, producing a widespread chill that grips the Earth. It would cause food chains to collapse resulting in a prolonged worldwide famine. Also, an expected electromagnetic pulse will zap all of our electronics. Scientists predict the Earth will be able to support only 5 to 10 percent of its current population; that means close to 6 billion people will die--most by starvation. How will our modern cities hold up in the face of a previous global catastrophe? TVPG VL | CC Show Site |

Could an alien infection cause an epidemic on earth? Some experts believe that spacecraft returning from Mars could bring back a harmful sample or comet dust falling into our atmosphere could cause pandemics. One astronomer believes that the Influenza of 1918, which killed between 50-100 million people, was one such outbreak and that another "infection" could decimate the world's population. Astrobiologists are now poised to bring Mars samples back to earth to examine them in a Bio 4 level safety lab. UFO Hunters: Invasion Illinois
Analysis of video taken of an alleged UFO over Illinois suggests the object could have been as large as 1500 feet across. The video, featured on UFO HUNTERS, captured three bright lights in a triangular pattern. It was part of a mass sighting of over fifty reports near Tinley Park, Illinois in 2004. Upon investigating, the team discovered that similar objects were reported all over the world in the days surrounding this event--from Australia to Canada. Sightings of triangular-shaped UFOs have been on the rise in recent decades, but was the Tinley Park mass sighting a solid object, or as some believe, a hoax involving weather balloons and flares? Analysis of the video suggests it could have been a solid object larger than any known craft. TVPG VL | CC Show Site |

Extreme Ocean Salvage
Extreme Ocean Salvage
The world's oceans are graveyards for some of the greatest ships ever built. During the mid-1500's the English warship Mary Rose was sunk by a French cannon. Finally, more then 400 years after it sank, its massive 580-ton hull would be raised from its watery grave. In the Baltic Sea the 17th century warship, The Vasa, was heralded as the greatest ship ever built at that time, but on the day of her maiden voyage she sank. After early salvages failed, our team spent more than a year battling dangers to raise her to the surface. When the huge French liner Normandie capsized in New York Harbor, it created a deadly toxic cesspool. The team along with the Navy Salvage Service pulled off the dangerous mission of bringing her back up. At the end of WWII in the shallow area of Scapa Flow a captured German Admiral gave the orders to scuttle 72 ships. Experts said they could never be raised. One man proved them wrong and raised 28 of them. TVPG VL | CC |

Ancient Discoveries: 12 - Machines of the Gods
Gods and religion played an extremely important role in antiquity. The problem with so many religions being worshipped by the Greeks and Romans was how would the priests of these temples pay for their upkeep? Great scholars such as Philon, Ctesibius and Heron were patronized by the temples to create "magic". In return, they created intriguing and mind blowing objects. It was a heavy mix of religion and science. One of the most famous illusions was found in Alexandria at the temple of Serapis, where an iron chariot was suspended in mid air. Stealing Lincoln's Body
Stealing Lincoln's Body
Before Lincoln finally came to rest in a steel-and-concrete-reinforced underground vault in Springfield, the President's body was repeatedly exhumed and moved, his coffin frequently opened. In 1876, eleven years after Abraham Lincoln's assassination, a band of Chicago counterfeiters plotted to steal Lincoln's body and hold it for ransom. Their plan was to demand $200,000 and the release of the gang's master engraver, who was in prison in Illinois. The Secret Service--recently formed to deal with the country's ballooning counterfeiting problem--infiltrated the gang with an informer. It also set in motion a cringe-inducing chain of events in which a group of well-intentioned, self-appointed guardians took it upon themselves to protect Lincoln's remains by any means necessary. This strange story of Lincoln at un-rest reveals how important this man was to so many, and perhaps our reluctance to let such a beloved and visionary leader go. TVPG VL | CC |

Sometimes a guitar is just a guitar, but if the guitar you're playing is Jimmy Hendrix's, then you're touching a generation. Some objects are one-of-a-kind (King Tut's mask,) others are ubiquitous (the wedding ring,) but they touch us all...personally and universally.
