  189. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. on racial discrimination | Speeches and Audio

Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was a fiery politician who struggled against great odds to win equal rights and opportunities for African Americans. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, in 1908, he succeeded his father as pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York, in 1937. A gifted orator, he attracted thousands to his church and campaigned vigorously for better housing and jobs for the poor of New York City, a disproportionate number of whom were African American. In 1941, he became the first African American to be elected to the New York City Council, and in 1945 he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives as a Democrat of Harlem. In Congress, he led the fight against racial segregation and was repeatedly reelected. Despite his political affiliation, he campaigned for President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 because he appreciated the Republican president's integration efforts. As chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor after 1960, he proved a flamboyant and effective politician, aiding the passage of much social legislation. In 1967, he was excluded from the House of Representatives, owing to his refusal to pay a libel suit that he had lost, but he was nonetheless reelected by his constituency in 1968. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1969 that he had the right to sit in Congress, but by then his health was failing. In 1970, he lost his first reelection bid, and the following year he retired to the island of Bimini in the Bahamas. He died in 1972.

  193. Adolf Eichmann on Trial | Speeches and Audio

On April 11, 1961, Adolf Eichmann, the Nazi SS officer who organized Adolf Hitler's ''final solution of the Jewish question,'' went on trial in Israel for his crimes during World War II. In 1942, Eichmann was appointed to coordinate the identification, assembly, and transportation of millions of Jews from occupied Europe to the Nazi death camps. He carried out this duty with horrifying efficiency, and between three to four million Jews perished in the extermination camps before the end of World War II. Close to two million were executed elsewhere. Following the war, Eichmann was captured by U.S. troops, but he escaped a prison camp in 1946 before having to face the Nuremberg International War Crimes Tribunal. In 1950, he arrived in Argentina, which maintained lax immigration policies and was a safe haven for many Nazi war criminals. In 1957, a German prosecutor secretly informed Israel that Eichmann was living in Argentina. Agents from Israel's intelligence service, the Mossad, were deployed to Argentina, and in May 1960 they abducted Eichmann and smuggled him to Israel. Argentina demanded Eichmann's return, but Israel argued that his status as an international war criminal gave them the right to proceed with a trial. On April 11, 1961, Eichmann's trial began in Jerusalem. It was the first televised trial in history. Eichmann faced 15 charges, including crimes against humanity, crimes against the Jewish people, and war crimes. He claimed he was just following orders, but the judges disagreed, finding him guilty on all counts on December 15 and sentencing him to die. On May 31, 1962, he was hanged near Tel Aviv. His body was cremated and his ashes thrown into the sea.

  196. AIM Takeover Wounded Knee | Speeches and Audio

On February 27, 1973, some 200 Sioux Native Americans, led by members of the American Indian Movement (AIM), occupied the South Dakota reservation town of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. Seventh Cavalry in 1890. The AIM members, some of them armed, took 11 allies of the anti-AIM tribal president hostage as local authorities and federal agents descended on the reservation. The next day, the Sioux traded gunfire with the federal marshals surrounding Wounded Knee and AIM leader Russell Means began negotiations for the release of the hostages, demanding that the U.S. Senate launch an investigation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Pine Ridge, and all Sioux reservations in South Dakota; and that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hold hearings on the scores of Indian treaties broken by the U.S. government. The Wounded Knee occupation lasted for a total of 70 days, during which time two Sioux men were shot to death by federal agents. One federal agent was paralyzed after being shot. On May 8, the AIM leaders and their supporters surrendered after White House officials promised to investigate their complaints. The AIM leaders were arrested, but on September 16, 1973, the charges against them were dismissed by a federal judge because of the U.S. government's unlawful handling of witnesses and evidence. Violence continued on the Pine Ridge Reservation throughout the rest of the 1970s, with several more AIM members and supporters losing their lives in confrontations with the U.S. government. The U.S. government took no steps to honor broken Indian treaties, but in the courts some tribes won major settlements from federal and state governments in cases involving tribal land claims.

  198. Al Gore on Global Warming: The Challenge | Speeches and Audio

Will our children have an Earth to live on? This is often a question that arises from debates over global warming and climate changes. At a White House climate change conference, initiated by President Clinton, Vice President Al Gore speaks to the issues surrounding climate change. He explains, as seen in the video, that Americans, and humans as a collective group, must face new realities that arise from this global warming issue. With advancement in technology, coupled with drastic annual increases in the population, human activities have a more substantial effect on global warming. We must reduce the amount of greenhouse gases emitted, as well as protect the most vulnerable piece in this equation: the atmosphere. As Al Gore discusses, no longer can Presidents force Americans to choose between an effective economy and a protected environment. Watch Vice President Al Gore, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, briefly speaks at Georgetown University about the new realities we face with climate changes in this video.

  208. Anita Hill Accuses Clarence Thomas | Speeches and Audio

In October 1991, Senate confirmation hearings were held for President George Bush's nomination of Clarence Thomas to the U.S. Supreme Court. Despite criticism by some senators of Thomas's conservative beliefs, the forty-three-year-old Court of Appeals judge seemed headed for an easy confirmation until Anita Hill, a law professor at the University of Oklahoma, stepped forward to accuse him of sexual harassment. Hill, who had served as an aide to Thomas at the Department of Education and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission during the 1980s, alleged that the Supreme Court nominee had repeatedly made sexually offensive comments to her in an apparent campaign of seduction. Hill initially requested that the Senate Judiciary Committee not make public the details of her charges, but the controversy was such that beginning on October 11, 1991, four days of televised hearings were held on the allegations. Here, Hill is heard detailing the charges to the Senate. Americans were shocked by both the frankness of Hill's lurid testimony and the unsympathetic response of the all-male committee, some of whom were openly antagonistic toward Hill. Thomas, meanwhile, denied the charges, and some witnesses called on his behalf cast doubt on Hill's character and mental stability. On October 15, the Senate voted 52 to 48 to confirm Thomas to the Supreme Court. Although the hearings left the Senate and the nation deeply divided, the episode served to foster a greater public awareness of the problem of sexual harassment in the workplace.

On February 1, 1960, the African American civil rights movement intensified when four black college students sat down at a whites-only lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina, and refused to voluntarily leave until they were served. Within days lunch counter sit-ins spread throughout North Carolina, and within weeks to cities and towns throughout the South. Here, a news correspondent reports on one such demonstration in Marshall, Texas, which saw some 200 black college students arrested and then assaulted with a firehouse when they refused to leave the courthouse square following their release. The lunch counter sit-in movement of 1960 led to the formation of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), which organized sit-ins at a variety of segregated public places, including movie theatres, department stores, supermarkets, and libraries. The non-violent civil rights movement, launched by Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1955, was gaining momentum.

  216. Argentine Propaganda Targets British | Speeches and Audio

The Falkland Islands, located about 300 miles off the southern tip of Argentina, were a British possession for 150 years when they were invaded by Argentine forces on April 2, 1982. The previous year, the 1,800 Falkland Islanders, mostly English-speaking sheep farmers, had voted in a referendum to remain British. Argentine amphibious forces rapidly overcame the small garrison of British marines at the town of Stanley on East Falkland and the next day seized the dependent territories of South Georgia and the South Sandwich group. Under orders from their commanders, the Argentine troops inflicted no British casualties, despite suffering losses to their own units. Nevertheless, Britain was outraged, and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher assembled a naval task force of 30 warships to retake the islands. As Britain is 8,000 miles from the Falklands, it took a few weeks for the British warships to arrive. Argentina took the opportunity to broadcast demoralizing propaganda to the approaching British sailors and troops. On April 25, South Georgia Island was retaken, and after several intensive naval battles fought around the Falklands, British troops landed on East Falkland on May 21. After several weeks of fighting, the large Argentine garrison at Stanley surrendered on June 14, effectively ending the conflict. Britain lost five ships and 256 lives in the fight to regain the Falklands, and Argentina lost its only cruiser and 750 lives. Humiliated in the Falklands War, the Argentine military was swept from power in 1983 and civilian rule was restored.

  218. Arthur Sylvester discloses the Gulf of Tonkin Incident | Speeches and Audio

By the summer of 1964, there were nearly 20,000 U.S. military advisers in Vietnam, and the Vietcong and North Vietnam were escalating their attacks against South Vietnamese government forces. On July 30, 1964, South Vietnam began clandestine naval raids against Communist positions in the Gulf of Tonkin. On August 2, the U.S. destroyer Maddox, allegedly on routine patrol duty, reported that it was under attack by North Vietnamese torpedo boats. The Maddox called for assistance, but by the time air support arrived the torpedo boats had apparently retreated or been destroyed. The next day, South Vietnamese vessels continued their raids, and on the night of August 4, the Maddox and another U.S. destroyer, the C. Turner Joy, reported that they were under attack from North Vietnamese torpedo boats. Neither vessel suffered any damage, and both fired their weapons at the alleged torpedo boats, which were only momentarily spotted on the radar. Later that night, the captain of the Maddox concluded that the radar blips were

  219. Assassination of Benigno Aquino Jr. | Speeches and Audio

On August 21, 1983, Philippine political leader Benigno Aquino Jr. returned to the Philippines after a three-year exile in the United States and was shot dead seconds after leaving his plane at Manila International Airport. Aquino, a longtime political opponent of the Philippines' authoritative president, Ferdinand Marcos, was returning to campaign against Marcos in promised future elections. A military investigation concluded that a communist killed Aquino, but the Filipino public blamed Marcos for the political killing and held demonstrations against his regime. In 1984, an independent commission concluded that the Philippines armed forces chief of staff, General Fabian Ver, had organized the assassination. Ver and the other men named in the report were acquitted by a panel of Marcos appointed judges the following year. Public outrage over the Aquino affair forced Marcos to call a new presidential election. Aquino widow, Corazon Aquino, ran against Marcos, and on February 7, 1986, the election was held. Marcos was declared victorious, but independent observers charged the regime with blatant electoral fraud. Aquino followers proclaimed her president, and much of the military defected to her side as massive anti-Marcos demonstrations were held. On February 25, Marcos, his wife, and their entourage were airlifted from the presidential palace in Manila by U.S. helicopters and fled to Hawaii. Marcos died in exile in 1989.

  220. Assassination of Egyptian President Sadat | Speeches and Audio

On October 6, 1981, Egyptian President Anwar el-Sadat was assassinated by Muslim extremists during a military parade commemorating the 1973 Yom Kippur War against Israel. The assassins, posing as soldiers in the military procession, attacked Sadat's reviewing stand with machine guns and grenades. The president was struck by bullets and shrapnel, suffering massive injuries. He was pronounced dead upon his arrival by helicopter at a nearby hospital. Seven other people on the reviewing stand were also killed. A leader of humble origins, Anwar el-Sadat was known for his daring actions while president of Egypt. After succeeding Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1970, he distanced Egypt from the Soviet Union and courted the West. On October 6, 1973, Egypt and Syria launched a joint surprise attack against Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Although the Arab armies were eventually repulsed, they made impressive gains against the formidable Israeli army. The episode greatly enhanced Sadat's prestige in the Middle East and provided him with an opportunity to seek peace with Israel after decades of war. In 1974, Egypt and Israel signed the first of two disengagement agreements and in 1977 Sadat made a dramatic journey to Jerusalem to meet with the Israeli government after the peace process stalled. In 1978, Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin signed the Camp David Accords--a framework for peace--followed by a final peace agreement--the first between Israel and one of its Arab neighbors--in 1979. The treaty ended the state of war between the two countries and provided for the establishment of full diplomatic and commercial relations. Sadat and Begin were jointly awarded the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts. However, Sadat's peace efforts were not so highly acclaimed in the Arab world, and in 1981 he was assassinated in Cairo.

  221. Attlee Addresses U.N. on Atomic Energy | Speeches and Audio

On June 19, 1946, British Prime Minister Clement Attlee appeared before the United Nations General Assembly to urge support for the Baruch Plan, which would place atomic energy under international control. The U.N. had first met on January 10 of that year, and its first resolution, adopted on January 24, called for the peaceful use of atomic energy and the elimination of weapons of mass destruction. The U.N. Atomic Energy Commission was established, and Bernard M. Baruch, the American representative to the commission, proposed a plan. Under the terms of his proposal, the United States, the sole nation in possession of atomic weaponry, would destroy its store of atomic bombs on the condition that the U.N. imposed controls on atomic development, prohibiting anything but the peaceful use of atomic energy. The plan passed the commission but was vetoed by the Soviet Union in the U.N.'s Security Council. As the Cold War progressed, the Atomic Energy Commission steadily lost influence, and on August 29, 1949, the U.S.S.R. successfully detonated an atomic warhead, setting off the nuclear arms race.

  223. B-25 Crashes Into Empire State Building | Speeches and Audio

At 9:49 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 1945, a B-25 Mitchell bomber lost in fog over Manhattan slammed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building, killing 14 people and injuring two dozen. The Army Air Corps bomber, which had three men aboard, was on a routine flight from Bedford, Massachusetts, to Newark, New Jersey, when the pilot--Lieutenant Colonel William Smith, Jr. suddenly found himself flying too low over Manhattan. He dodged two skyscrapers but could not avoid the Empire State Building, the world's tallest building at the time. The aircraft exploded into the offices of the National Catholic Welfare Council, incinerating nine volunteers and propelling the organization's publicist out a window. His charred body was found on a 72nd-floor setback. Another woman was fatally injured when the elevator she was riding in plunged dozens of floors to the lobby. Another woman in the same elevator survived. All three aboard the aircraft perished. The fire caused by the bomber's high-octane fuel was extinguished within an hour by New York City fireman. Debris was showered over several blocks of midtown. The 102-skyscraper suffered no critical damage but cost $1 million to repair.

  224. B-29 Raid Against Japan | Speeches and Audio

In the opening months of 1945, the Japanese home islands were subjected to an increasingly intensive aerial bombardment from U.S. long-range B-29 bombers based on the Mariana Islands. At first, the B-29s attacked in daylight from high altitudes, but in February the U.S. air command began experimenting with low-level attacks at night, employing napalm and magnesium incendiaries. Here, the first direct broadcast of one such B-29 raid is heard. The firebombing of Japanese cities proved a horrifying success, and on the night of March 9-10, some 300 B-29s dropped almost 2,000 tons of incendiaries on Tokyo, destroying large portions of the Japanese capital, killing 100,000 people, and leaving one million survivors homeless. During the next nine days, U.S. bombers flew similar missions against Nagoya, Osaka, and Kobe. As the bombardment of Japan continued, an even deadlier option became available to the United States after the world's first atomic bomb was detonated in the New Mexico desert on July 16. Hoping to force Japan's surrender and thereby avoid a costly amphibious invasion, President Harry Truman approved the use of the new weapon against Japan. On August 6, the B-29 Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing an estimated 80,000 people and fatally wounding thousands more. Three days later, a second U.S. atomic bomb was dropped on the coastal city of Nagasaki. On August 14, Japan agreed to surrender.

  230. Battle for Iwo Jima | Speeches and Audio

In early 1945, U.S. military command sought to gain control of the island of Iwo Jima in advance of an intensified bombing campaign against the Japanese home islands in World War II. Iwo Jima, a tiny volcanic island located in the Pacific about 700 miles southeast of Japan, was to be a base for fighter aircraft and an emergency-landing site for bombers. On February 19, 1945, after three days of heavy naval and aerial bombardment, the first wave of U.S. Marines stormed onto Iwo Jima's inhospitable shores. The Japanese garrison on the island numbered 22,000 heavily entrenched men. Their commander, General Tadamichi Kuribayashi, had been expecting an Allied invasion for months and used the time wisely to construct an intricate and deadly system of underground tunnels, fortifications, and artillery that withstood the initial Allied bombardment.

  231. Battle of An Loc | Speeches and Audio

In the spring of 1972, North Vietnam launched the Easter Offensive against South Vietnamese forces, striking at the north of South Vietnam, the central highlands, and the south near Saigon. The attack came during the process of ''Vietnamization,'' in which the United States was turning the war over to the South Vietnamese army. Fewer than 70,000 Americans remained in the country--from a high of nearly 550,000 in 1969--and few of the Americans remaining fought on the ground. North Vietnam's leaders intended to destroy South Vietnam's armed forces in one massive offensive, and their communist troops overran numerous bases and cities throughout South Vietnam. An Loc, the capital of Binh Long province and 60 miles north of Saigon, was besieged for over a month by North Vietnamese forces, which wanted to make it the capital of South Vietnam's Vietcong rebels. As many as 1,000 shells fell on the city each day, and it was only through intensive U.S. air support that it was kept out of communist hands. In January 1973, representatives of the United States, North and South Vietnam, and the Vietcong signed a peace agreement in Paris, ending the direct U.S. military involvement in the Vietnam War. The tentative cease-fire between North and South Vietnam ended within weeks, and by early 1974 full-scale war had resumed. Without U.S. aid, South Vietnamese forces could not fight back the communist onslaught. In 1975, South Vietnam surrendered, and the country was reunified under a communist government.

Benjamin Britten, born in 1913, was Britain's leading composer of the 20th century, and his operas are considered the finest produced in Britain since those of Henry Purcell in the 17th century. His first great work was the opera Peter Grimes (1945), and his other noted operatic works include The Rape of Lucretia (1946), Gloriana (1953; written for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1960), and Death in Venice (1973). He also excelled in choral works, and his masterpiece in this genre was War Requiem (1962), based on the First World War poems of Wilfred Owen and sung at the rededication of the reconstructed Coventry Cathedral, destroyed during World War II. He also formed and led the English Opera Group and started the Aldeburgh Festival, which was one of Britain's most important music festivals and centered on Britten's work. In 1976, he was made a life peer, the first composer or musician to be elevated to that rank. He died later that year.
