Madhouse
Meet the Drivers
Burt Myers
Age: 33
Wins at Bowman Gray: 32
Occupation: Stay-at-home dad
Major rival: Junior Miller
Crew Chief: Scott Widener
Car owner: Philip Smith
Like his brother Jason, Burt is third-generation racing royalty, great-nephew of the legendary Billy Myers, who lost his life in a wreck at Bowman Gray 50 years ago, and grandson of Billy Myers, who died of a heart attack while racing there less than a year later.
Burt has racked up 30 victories and three championships in a single decade, creeping up on his rival, veteran driver and perennial champion Junior Miller. On his very first night racing at Bowman Gray, Burt smashed Junior into the wall, launching a feud that has riveted fans and raised NASCAR officials' eyebrows for more than a decade. Tensions escalated in 1998, when Burt's father Gary tackled Junior in a post-race skirmish. Then, during the 2008 championship, the men nearly came to blows after Junior rammed Burt out of the lead.
Along with natural talent and an aggressive driving style, Burt boasts boyish good looks that have melted many Winston-Salem hearts. Other drivers complain that he has no problem resorting to dirty tactics yet whines when he's on the receiving end. But Burt doesn't mind the negative attention, explaining, "If they ain't talking about you, good or bad, that probably means you ain't winning races."
