HISTORY
For centuries, eyewitnesses in Maine have reported spotting mutant canines. One theory holds that these creatures are surviving Dire wolves, a carnivorous mammal thought to have died out 10,000 years ago.
MOST RECENT SIGHTING
In 2006, a mysterious canine-like creature was found dead alongside a road in Turner, Maine. Some residents believed it was the same wild-eyed, screaming-in-the night creature who had allegedly been terrorizing and killing domestic animals in the region for years. DNA testing later revealed the beast to be a wolf-dog hybrid.
