Shark Wranglers

Chris Fischer
Chris Fischer is the ultimate modern-day explorer on a critical mission that will make history. Since 2007 he has led 14 expeditions and covered over 250,000 nautical miles to unlock the mysteries surrounding great white sharks and other giants of the ocean. Fischer gladly accepts the trials and rewards of being an expedition leader—wicked weather and massive financial responsibility don't scare him. He is devoted to protecting apex predators like sharks, which are disappearing at a rate of tens of millions a year despite being the great balance keepers of the ocean. "If you put shark populations at risk, you put the entire ocean at risk—it's that simple," says Fischer.
Fischer and his team pioneered a new method for capturing and releasing 2-ton great white sharks and other large marine species on the 126-foot vessel MV OCEARCH. Their unique system provides the opportunity for leading science teams to conduct unprecedented research on the oceans' giants. The ultimate goal is to identify key areas where the sharks breed, birth and feed in order to protect those areas from exploitation. The GPS and other data collected from the sharks also protect humans by identifying how close sharks swim to beaches and shorelines. The crew of the MV OCEARCH and the renowned shark experts who work with Fischer and his nonprofit OCEARCH put themselves at risk without thinking twice. They're on a mission to forever change the way fishermen, scientists and policymakers think of each other and work together.
