Ultimate Diver
Full Name: Patrick Musimu
Hometown: Bonaire, Dutch Caribbean
Patrick Musimu of Belgium is able to dive down 656 feet on a single breath. He has a lung capacity of 9 liters and can hold his breath for more than eight minutes and 33 seconds.
Inspired by Stan Lee's own Aqua Man, Patrick believes there is no limit to how far he can push his ability to withstand the enormous pressures associated with such depths.
Patrick began diving in 1999 at the age of 28 after reading a magazine article about free divers; from then on he decided he wanted to become one of these "dolphin men."
He quickly got frustrated with traditional free diving techniques and started to explore other ways to push the sport forward. After researching how seals dive, he decided to try using seawater to equalize the pressure in his inner ear; normally, divers use air for this purpose.
Patrick started this revolutionary process by using a syringe to force seawater up his nose. Once he got past the pain of opening his sinuses in this way, he discovered that he was able to use this technique to dive even deeper.
On June 30, 2005, he exceeded the previous "No Limit" world record in free diving by almost 40 meters, diving to a depth of 209 meters without the use of any breathing apparatus.
For Patrick, extreme deep free diving is an adventure and not just a sport.
