Once a devout monk living a peaceful and humble life at a monastery in Northumbria, Athelstan is spared by Ragnar after his monastery is pillaged by the Vikings. Although Ragnar takes Athelstan captive as a slave, he treats him well and eventually befriends him. As he lives amongst the Vikings, Athelstan learns that their culture is shockingly different from the Christian religion, from their attitude toward their gods to sex and sacrifice.
George Blagden got his start immediately after graduating from the prestigious Guildhall Drama School, which he attended on a full scholarship, in the independent feature The Philosophers opposite Rhys Wakefield, Sophie Lowe, James D’Arcy and Daryl Sabara. Last year he appeared in Universal’s Les Miserables as Grantaire. He also appeared in Warner Bros.’ Wrath of the Titans. Blagden was featured in Variety’s “Ten Brits to Watch” along with Sam Claflin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Tuppence Middleton, to name a few.
