On June 14, 1985, a TWA jetliner en route from Athens to Rome was hijacked by armed Shiite terrorists who ordered that the aircraft be flown to Beirut, where the plane was held for 17 days with hostages on board. On day four of the situation, after one of the American hostages was killed, President Ronald Reagan held a news conference to bring the nation up to date.
