Prior to James Madison, presidents wore knee breeches. James Madison was the first US president to sport trousers. He was also the first president to be under enemy fire (during the War of 1812). And at 5 feet, 4 inches, and weighing less than 100 pounds, he was the shortest and lightest president in US history.
