War
April 1813

Illustration

In April 1813, the Americans successfully invaded a Canadian city. But they would eventually pay a heavy price for it.

A 1,700-man U.S. force took the city of York-present-day Toronto-defeating a 700-man defending force. After they won, however, they looted and burned the town, destroying several government buildings.

The British would not forget this. A little over a year later, when they invaded Washington D.C., they would get their revenge.

Quote
"It became too evident that our numbers and means of defence were inadequate to the task of maintaining possession of York against the vast superiority of the force brought against it."
- Major General Roger Hale Sheaffe
