War
December 1814

Illustration

The negotiations that began in August eventually produced the Treaty of Ghent, which took effect on Christmas Eve, 1814. So that was the end of the war, right?

Wrong.

Without the World Wide Web, or even a telegraph, word traveled slowly in the early 1800's. The last battle of the War of 1812 took place January 8, 1815-more than two weeks after the treaty took effect.

There's a lesson in all this, and the lesson is: always pick up your phone messages.

Republic
The form of government in which ultimate power resides in the people, who elect representatives to participate in decision-making on their behalf. A republic is founded on the idea that every citizen has a right to participate, directly or indirectly, in affairs of state, and the general will of the people should be sovereign.
