First jazz concert at Carnegie Hall

Benny Goodman and his orchestra perform the first jazz concert at Carnegie Hall in New York on this day in 1938. Guest performers included Count Basie and members of the Basie and Duke Ellington orchestras. The performance was a milestone for jazz, which originated around 1900 but wasn't appreciated as a serious musical form for several decades.
