Robert A. Toombs

Robert A. Toombs (1810-85) was a prominent American politician who turned ardently secessionist in the years leading up to the Civil War (1861-65). After being passed over for the Confederate presidency, Toombs served briefly as Confederate secretary of state and a brigadier general in the Confederate army. During and after Reconstruction, he sought to restore white supremacy in his native Georgia.
