CREATE YOUR OWN ENVIRONMENTAL CAMPAIGN
Create a poster that illustrates one of these risks, as it pertains to the case of the Arizona and its location near the Hawaiian Islands. You could draw a picture, create a collage of images, or develop a flyer that would help increase awareness of the potential threat.

When the Japanese sunk the newly refueled USS Arizona battleship at Pearl Harbor in December 1941, it created a major environmental hazard. As the ship has undergone corrosion in the years since, it has been leaking oil out of its open hatches, forming a visible oil slick on the water s surface. There has been a steady leakage from the ship over the last sixty years, averaging about a quart a day. The National Park Service estimates that at least half a million gallons remain trapped in the sunken ship. If the ship s remaining fuel bunkers were to collapse as a result of ongoing corrosion, there could be a major oil spill in the harbor.
Activity
What are the primary dangers and environmental risks associated with a major oil spill? (If necessary, do additional research on a past oil spill to help answer this question.)
