In a This Day in History video, learn that on July 9, 1877, the All England Croquet and Long Tennis Club began its first Long Tennis Tournament at Wimbledon. Tennis was still at its beginning: the balls were covered in rough, hand sewn flannel and the rackets resembled snowshoes, in both shape and weight. At the tournament, Spencer Gore crushed his opponent William Marshall and became the first Wimbledon champion.
