In a This Day in History video, learn that on July 26, 1775, the second continental congress established the United States Postal System. Back in the time of the colonies, mail delivery was inconsistent, but during the American Revolution, it became crucial. The congress put Ben Franklin in charge; as the first Post Master General, he organized a system for carrying communication between Congress and the armies. The U.S. Postal System ran so well that the United States kept it and is still using it today.
