Chance and Soraya Painter

Homesteaders Chance and Soraya Painter live on a heavily wooded, remote property in the Alaskan interior with their three young sons: Otter, Omaciw, and the most recent arrival, Eider. Still only in their 20s, Chance and Soraya moved to the wilderness of Alaska for the unparalleled level of wild adventure and freedom that the land and off-grid lifestyle provide – but it hasn’t been easy. They spent their first winter living in a canvas wall tent before building a modest log cabin by hand and establishing a more permanent settlement. Chance traps local furbearers, whose hides they preserve using traditional brain-tanning techniques, before Soraya sews them into clothing for their family or handcrafted items they sell to make a living. In addition to hunting and fishing, they raise a variety of livestock on their property and grow fresh vegetables in their garden for food. Fully committed to living and raising their children as close to nature as possible, the Painters’ journey in the Alaskan bush is only just beginning.
