Armed Forces Day marks a time to celebrate the efforts of the uniformed personnel within the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force and Coast Guard. Whether during periods of regional conflict or relative peace, the approximately 1.34 million active-duty service members across the American military help keep their fellow countrymen and women at home out of harm’s way.

Here’s what to know about the honorary holiday that is part of the annual Armed Forces Week.

When is Armed Forces Day?

Armed Forces Day has been observed on the third Saturday of May for more than seven decades. In 2026, Armed Forces Day falls on Saturday, May 16.

How is Armed Forces Day different from Veterans Day and Memorial Day?

Armed Forces Day celebrates both active and former members of the U.S. military. Meanwhile, Veterans Day commemorates former service members every November 11, and Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, specifically honors people who died while serving.

Why Harry Truman Desegregated the US Military

When President Harry S. Truman signed Executive Order 9981, it helped other parts of American society to accept desegregation.

How did Armed Forces Day begin?

With rising Cold War tensions spurring new geopolitical strategies, President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947 to bring the Army, Navy and newly formed Air Force under control of what would become the Department of Defense. At the time, the Army and Navy were separately commemorating their branches on the respective dates of April 6 and October 27, while the first Air Force Day arrived on August 1, 1948.

Upon taking his post as secretary of defense in March 1949, Louis Johnson pursued the idea of a single day to celebrate the strength of the unified military branches. He studied various reports on the feasibility of an Armed Forces Day and found President Truman to be an enthusiastic supporter of the idea, Johnson shared in a May 1950 speech.

Why is Armed Forces Day in May?

According to Defense Secretary Johnson, the selection of a suitable date proved the most challenging aspect of Armed Forces Day’s inception due to the lack of available days on the calendar. It was believed that an attempt to combine Armed Forces Day with an already established holiday or commemoration such as D-Day would diminish the significance of both occasions. Furthermore, both the cold stretches of winter and the summer vacation months marked suboptimal periods for communities to come together to celebrate. It was finally determined that the third Saturday in May was one of the few pleasant-weather dates that presented no conflicts to existing traditions.

When was the first Armed Forces Day?

President Truman declared that May 20, 1950, would be the first Armed Forces Day with his issuance of Proclamation 2873.

Operating under the theme “Teamed for Defense,” the occasion saw notable participation across the United States and even overseas. Some 10,000 active service members and veterans paraded before the president in Washington, D.C., while approximately 33,000 people took part in festivities in New York City.

“Power for Peace” became a recurring theme for the celebrations as Armed Forces Day developed into an annual tradition. Other themes over the years have included “Appreciation of a Nation,” “Freedom Through Unity” and “Guardians of Peace.”

While President Dwight Eisenhower continued to issue Armed Forces Day proclamations in the footsteps of his predecessor, President John F. Kennedy established the holiday’s staying power with his 1961 proclamation that designated the third Saturday of that year and each succeeding year as Armed Forces Day. Although a national holiday, Armed Forces Day is not a federal holiday, meaning federal employees aren’t granted time off.

World War II with Tom Hanks

“World War II with Tom Hanks” is the definitive retelling for a new generation: a sweeping, deeply human portrait of how the modern world was forged in global war. The series premieres Monday, May 25, at 8/7c and streams the next day.

How is Armed Forces Day celebrated?

In Proclamation 2873, President Truman urged his fellow citizens to “display the flag of the United States at their homes on Armed Forces Day and to participate in exercises expressive of our recognition of the skill, gallantry, and uncompromising devotion to duty” that military members display.

As with Memorial Day and Veterans Day, Armed Forces Day is celebrated in many communities with parades, picnics and other events. Many military bases host tours, demonstrations and family activities on this day. The Veterans of Foreign Wars provides additional suggestions for meaningfully marking the occasion, including donating to or volunteering for a veterans’ service organization.
