How Alchemy's Quest for the Philosopher's Stone Led to Modern Chemistry

The legendary philosopher's stone was alchemy's ultimate prize—even Isaac Newton devoted years searching for it.

The philosopher's stone was said to possess extraordinary powers. It was the ultimate goal of alchemy, an early scientific and philosophical tradition rooted in the belief that matter—and even a human’s soul—could be transformed. According to legend, the mythical substance could change base metals into silver or gold, and even grant eternal life. For centuries, that promise captivated scholars, rulers and alchemists. Even renowned scientists devoted years to the search.

The question of what the philosopher's stone was—and how to create it—dogged "alchemists for many centuries," says Tara E. Nummedal, author of Alchemy and Authority in the Holy Roman Empire. But, she notes, "it wasn't the only question they had."

The fascination with the stone's transformative powers drove centuries of experimentation, and helped lay the foundations for modern scientific inquiry. The search for the philosopher's stone helped advance laboratory techniques that contributed to the later development of chemistry and influenced other fields such as pharmacology and metallurgy.

What Is the Philosopher’s Stone?

The philosopher’s stone was not a stone at all, explains Arthur Greenberg, author of From Alchemy to Chemistry in Picture and Story. Instead, it was “most likely a powder, tincture or liquid," he says.  

Nummedal adds that the philosopher’s stone was “often described as a brown or red powder that you could throw into a cauldron or pot and it would work as a kind of catalyst to transform.”

The right combination of ingredients could turn ordinary metals—such as tin, lead, zinc, nickel or iron—into gold or silver. For centuries, alchemists and scientists experimented with countless substances in hopes of cheaply producing precious metals.

According to legend, the right concoction also turned the philosopher’s stone into an elixir of life, with the power to cure illnesses, make people young again and grant immortality. Just as fire was thought to purify metals, many believed careful study of nature could refine the human soul. Alchemists often described their quest as the "Great Work"—a process of perfecting both matter and the person conducting the experiment.

The Origins of Alchemy

Alchemy emerged in Greco-Roman Egypt during the first century A.D., says Nummedal. It developed at a time of intellectual and artistic ferment. By this period, craftspeople were making eye-catching items with dyes and glass; the work of philosophers like Aristotle had become more popular; and there was a rise in temple magic and speculation over divine revelations. People wanted to understand the natural world. Together, these intellectual, spiritual and practical traditions helped to create an occult science centered around transforming matter.

Greenberg credits Greco-Egyptian alchemist Zosimos of Panopolis as the first person to mention the philosopher’s stone. Zosimos wrote in his encyclopedia Cheirokmeta, published around A.D. 300, that the substance could turn metals into gold. 

Over the next five centuries, in the early part of the Middle Ages, the idea of the philosopher’s stone traveled across the Islamic world, explains Nummedal. “So much of chemistry, alchemy and other scientific ideas that led to medicine and astronomy were developed in the medieval Islamic world," she says. "The reason so many words in chemistry begin with "al"—like alkali and alcohol—is because they come from Arabic.”

However, Europeans did not begin translating these Arabic texts until the 12th century, notes Nummedal, when growing curiosity about alchemy spurred efforts to unlock their secrets.

The Myth of the Philosopher’s Stone Spreads

European alchemists and scholars spent centuries studying, translating and interpreting Arabic alchemical texts. Eventually, university and Christian theological scholars linked the philosopher’s stone to Jesus’s death. “They believed that he died for our sins, and in the process of being tortured, dying and reborn, he redeemed humanity," says Nummedal. "So they thought that if they took nature, put it in the fire, tortured it, dissolved it and put it back together, what would emerge is the philosopher’s stone, and the stone could redeem metals like Christ redeemed humans."

In the 15th and 16th centuries, speculation over the power of the philosopher’s stone spread across Europe due to the invention of the printing press and increased literacy across the continent. When pharmacists, miners and other people who worked with nature and metals learned about the philosopher’s stone, they began to experiment with alchemy.

Nummedal believes most of them just wanted to create “good medicine” that could elongate lifespans, rather than immortality. “Plus, there was this idea that if you could discover how nature worked, you had some insight into God, because nature was a gift of God," she says.

Wealthy princes, emperors and patrons commissioned alchemists to try to find the philosopher’s stone, eager to get “more gold, have more productive minds and live as long as they could,” says Nummedal. “It’s really in the 16th century that the market for alchemical expertise developed.”

The Real People who Tried to Find the Philosopher’s Stone

While he’s now credited for revolutionizing the world of mathematics and science, Sir Isaac Newton secretly spent decades trying to make the philosopher’s stone. He wrote over a million words on the subject and collected manuscripts as he sought to transmute base metals into gold. 

Newton’s fascination with “breaking nature and matter down and then resynthesizing it into its original form gave him this idea that maybe light could be broken down and put together," says Nummedal, resulting in his corpuscular theory of light, which proposed that light is made up of tiny particles rather than a continuous wave.

Meanwhile, in 1678, Robert Boyle—often regarded as the founding father of modern chemistry—anonymously published a piece entitled Of a Degradation of Gold Made by an Anti-Elixir. The research detailed how gold was degraded into salt, says Greenberg. “He made the point that if you could go one way, you could presumably do a reverse transmutation in the right direction.” 

Boyle spent 40 years investigating the properties of mercury and performing experiments to make metals into gold, according to Lawrence M. Principe, author of The Secrets Of Alchemy. Boyle even reportedly believed the philosopher’s stone could help people interact with spirits.

Before Newton and Boyle, one of the earliest Europeans to write the philosopher’s stone was Albertus Magnus, a German Dominican friar, philosopher and scientist who published De Mineralibus in 1260, says Greenberg. Other notable alchemists followed.

In the late 16th century, German noblewoman Anna Maria Zieglerin claimed she knew how to create the mythical substance. She presented Duke Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel with several recipes, including one for Lion’s Blood, "a golden oil that she said could be used to make the philosopher's stone," says Nummedal.

Zieglerin attributed even greater powers to the substance. "She also said it could be used on nature to make trees bloom in winter, a barren woman fertile," Nummedal explains, adding that a prophecy held she would use it to bear children whose birth would usher in the apocalypse. When Zieglerin ultimately failed to produce the philosopher's stone, she was executed.

In 1597, Georg Honauer was hanged on gold-coated iron gallows, after he failed to fulfill his promise to transmute large quantities of iron into gold for Duke Friedrich I of Württemberg, says Greenberg. 

Thanks to the printing press, various books circulated that purportedly broke down the steps to make the philosopher’s stone. These included The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine (1599) attributed to Johann Thölde, Michael Maier’s Atalanta Fugiens (1617) and Mutus Liber (1677), attributed to Isaac Baulot.

Alchemy's Enduring Legacy

Arguments over the legitimacy of alchemists throughout the 16th century meant that the practice became an “emblem of fraud and developed a shady reputation,” says Nummedal. It was Boyle’s The Sceptical Chymist, published in 1661, that urged scientists to reject mystical claims and focus on experiments. 

Despite centuries of searching, alchemists never reached a consensus on exactly what the philosopher's stone was. For some, it was primarily a way to transmute metals into gold; for others it was a universal medicine or spiritual transformation. That variety of interpretations helps explain why the philosopher's stone remained one of history's most enduring scientific and philosophical mysteries.

But Nummedal insists that the experimentation, laboratory techniques and development of equipment used in alchemy to try to find the philosopher’s stone laid the foundation for today’s chemistry and science. "By the 18th century, elements of alchemy, including pharmacy, had basically been rebranded and turned into what we would recognize as chemistry today.”
