UNITED STATES - SEPTEMBER 04: Engraving made in 1847 by C E Wagstaff and J Andrews after Captain Seth Eastman, US Army, of Quaker pilgrims meeting Massasoit (c 1580-1661), chief of the Wampanoag, probably in what is now Massachusetts. Massasoit, one of the most powerful chiefs in New England, signed a treaty with the Pilgrims in 1621, which he kept until his death. The population of the Americas was drastically reduced after the arrival of the Europeans due to war, disease, forced removal and relocation, and the destruction of traditional ways of life. Part 2 by Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), published in Philadelphia in 1847. (Photo by SSPL/Getty Images)
