On November 5, 2024, Delaware State Senator Sarah McBride is elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first openly transgender candidate to win a seat in Congress.
McBride publicly came out as transgender in 2012 at the end of her term as American University’s student body president. Politically active since childhood, McBride went on to become the first out trans woman to intern in the White House, the first to speak at the national political party convention and the first to serve in a state senate when she was elected to represent Delaware’s 1st Senate District in 2020.
