At a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, then-former President Donald J. Trump is shot by a would-be assassin, but escapes with an injury to his right ear. Two people are killed in the attack—a bystander attending the rally and the shooter himself.
Trump was in western Pennsylvania campaigning for the 2024 presidential election against incumbent President Joe Biden. Trump was just six minutes into his speech at the outdoor rally when gunshots rang out and people in the crowded shouted “Get down, get down!”
Eight shots were fired in total, including one that killed Corey Comperatore, a rally attendee sitting in the stands behind the former president’s podium. The 50-year-old father of two dove in front of his family when he was fatally shot in the head. Two other men in the crowd were critically injured.
